Dr. David Newman, C. Ht.
This weekend was fantastic. Friday was my birthday and as tradition with my wife Linda if a birthday falls on a Friday or Saturday the entire weekend is called the Birthday Weekend and it is like one party all weekend long. Friday I worked from the home office rather than go into the clinic and then I broadcasted Success Talk with Dr. David Newman from Roseheartradio.com. The interview with “The Book Broads” was lively and to be quite honest the most fun I had with radio guests in months. Peggy Richardson (the ring leader of these wild ladies) coordinated a spirited round of Happy Birthday just as Linda my wife brought down my Birthday cake. Yes I was still on the air and it was quite a surprise. Friday Linda and I went out to dinner and then came home and watched movies on the television. Saturday, Linda and I went out and played miniture golf. Miniture golf doesn’t sound too exciting but one must understand I am a “Workaholic” and the last time I have taken time just for myself was in 1987 when I graduated ASU with my undergraduate degree. I have since received three additional degrees and then completed an additional 720 hours and received a diploma in Hypnotherapy and Handwriting Analysis.
Last night (Sunday) Linda and I went to the most recent Harry Potter movie (yes I love Harry Potter) and then we actually had dinner out again. This was completely out of character for me. Then we came home. This morning I got up at 5am and came down to the office to review emails and review my appointments for today. During this “quiet time” I like to reflect on many things. This morning it dawned on me about the death of Billy Mayes the “Pitchman” for many informericals. I read an account of his life and he was proud of the fact he was a “Pitchman” he felt that he was the last of a long line of professionals that simply do not exist any more. Well they do but not with the skill of Billy. I watched Pitchmen on the internet and it dawned on my why Billy was so successful. Billy used hypnotic modialities and he used them alot!
I don’t believe Billy was specifically trained in hypnosis or at least I think he would say he never was yet he used every single element of the hypnotic modiality to the max. Yeah he was a Pro! Lets look at how Billy did it (and he did it so well). Lets look at every step in detail:
A “hypnotic modality” as: “Anything that attempts to control or modify human behavior through the
influence or creation of belief systems.” Billy had a specific of every infomercial and that was to get us to open our wallets and give him money. Buy his product or if possible make several purchases in one simple phone call. The formula is easy and can be duplicated by anyone. Now I am going to give you the secret of his success:
There are three necessary ingredients for any hypnotic modality to be effective. These ingredients are synergistic in that they must all be
present at the same time and working together in order for the hypnotic modality to be effective. Leave out any one element and the modality will fall short of its goal. A modality’s effectiveness can be measured and even predicted by the strength of presence of the three ingredients.
The first ingredient necessary in order for any hypnotic modality to be effective is “authority”. The subject must perceive the presenter of the hypnotic modality as an authority figure in order for him to even consider the acceptance of the message being presented. “Authority” is achieved through the process of “one-ups-man ship.” The first process of “one-ups-manship is establishing control over the environment. Many times a social struggle exists between presenter and subject over control of the environment and the establishment of authority. If the presenter fails to prevail in that battle of “one-ups-manship” then the modality will be ineffective.
One-ups-manship can take many forms. A common example is “Special Clothes”. Special clothes are used to socially separate the presenter from
the subject. When you go see a doctor and if he showed up in jeans he may not have the same effect on the subject had he worn a suit with a lab
coat. Many speakers make use of a podium and stage. Most professionals make use of diplomas and credentials on the office wall. When examining a “hypnotic modality” you should note the one-upsmanship techniques of the presenter. Billy wore special clothes a blue long sleeve shirt and tan pants combined with his neatly trimmed black beard. His partner ever remarked that “everyone knows Billy he is always wearing the blue shirt and tan pants with that black beard.” That look was Billy’s trademark.
.
Ingredient #2 can be presented in any of the following three formats:
Each one can be considered a lower level of the previous one. For example the first and highest level of element #2 is a “doctrine”. The
doctrine is the written form of a theory or message. This usually comes in the form of a book. An example of a doctrine is the Bible, the Koran, etc. Many times the doctrine is said to be written or inspired by an even higher authority than the presenter himself.
The next lower format below the “doctrine” is the “paradigm”. A paradigm is a theory or model of how something works. The paradigm has not yet evolved into a book but rather is presented verbally sometime utilizing charts or graphs.
The lowest level format of element #2 is “translogic”. Translogic is not quite as evolved as a paradigm or a doctrine. In fact it is called translogic because it is transitory (temporary) logic. It is called transitory logic because it only makes sense for a very short period of time.
Regardless of whether the modality relies on a doctrine, paradigm, or translogic, ingredient #2 is essential for satisfying the critical area of the mind’s need for a logical reason. In order for the message to be accepted you must satisfy the need for logic and reason in order for the message to be accepted.
The doctrine/paradigm/translogic used by the presenter must be made to fit the existing belief systems of the subject and not vice versa.
Billly used the paradigm and translogic exclusively. Billy always made use you the audience understood how his product worked. Not the details of why it worked mind you but how to use the produce effectively. Each and every product Billy sold had to have the WOW factor. In other words it had to work like magic. This WOW factor immediately tied the paradigm into translogic. Billy would establish a logical need for you to watch and accept his message. Billy established his message and then constantly hit you over the head with that message as many times as he could in a single 30 second segment. To break this up Billy would shift video or the pictures you saw with the same message stated different ways.
Ingredient #3 is perhaps the most important ingredient. The purpose of element #3 is to create an overload of message units so as to gain access to the reactive part of the mind (sub-conscious). If access to the reactive part of the mind is not gained, the message of the presenter will be dealt with solely with logic and reason and will not affect the belief system of the subject. If we are not able to reach and affect the belief system of the subject, the message will have little or no effect on the subject’s behavior. This element is called overload/internal experience because the purpose of the overload is to create an internal emotional and a physical experience within the subject. The most important thing that could be said about this element is that the subject must FEEL SOMETHING!. Once the subject “feels it” then they experience it as “real” and must believe it. How do we get the subject to feel it? We get the subject to “feel it” by creating an overload of message units, triggering an internal experience and attributing that internal experience to the message being presented via the paradigm.
Here is how Billy achieve this third and most important ingredient:
- All Televisions or computers either flicker or pulse. This flicker or pulse gives our eyes and brains a continuous series of messages units at a very fast rate of speed.
- Billy wore special clothes
- Billy “projected” he yelled at the camera. This projection gives the air of authority and urgency
- Billy presented you with a product that worked magic. He knew how it worked but only showed you how to use it. His product make your problems go away.
- Billy mixed in 3 different forms of video with a different voice, speaking at a different rate of speed and volume.
- Billy would be flashed back into the informerical several times during the segment thereby creating exactly 4 seperate forms of overload of messages units
- Hypnotic command to Call Now To Order!
- The order taker uses your high suggestibility to increase the size of the order by selling you additional units of the product or sometimes different products.
The last ingredient really isn’t an ingredient at all. It is to provide a route of excape. In my office I provide the subconscious an escape into hypnosis. Billy provided you an escape by giving you the command to “CALL TO ORDER” three simple words that brings the subject out of hypnosis but not out of suggestability. When you the customer call that number they again know that you are in a highly suggestabile state and they use that by completing the immediate order (they get your credit card number) and then they begin to “Add On” additional offers. You the customer is much more likely to buy now than in 15 minutes when you have come out of your highly suggestability state we call hypnosis.
Billy isn’t the only one using this formula, every single advertiser uses it too. But it goes even further. Schools, Churches, and gambling and gaming also use the exact same formula. Perhaps at a later date if there is any interest I will explain in detail how these three establishments also use hypnosis to bring their message home.
Have a fantastic week.
